Electric cars are no longer the future. They are here. While 2021 saw a host of new electric cars being launched in India, 2022 is expected to be an absolute firecracker of a year for more electric cars in India. Thanks to the ever-expanding issue of pollution, especially in the capital city of Delhi, and other factors like rising fuel prices, the EV segment has witnessed an exponential growth in the last few years. So, as everyone draws up plans for 2022, we thought of giving you a list of all the electric cars that will launch in the country during the year. Also, do note that there could be more additions to this list as the year progresses, but, we’ll be sure to keep you updated on those, as well.
Having said that, here is a list of the ten best EVs you can buy in 2022.
1.Tata Altroz EV
Perceived to be a premium hatchback, TATA Altroz EV is expected to arrive in the first half of 2022. The stylish EV from Tata motors will roll in with a tweaked front end and different alloy wheels and has inherited Tata’s Ziptron powertrain, first seen in Nexon EV. Not only does the new Altroz comes with an electric fuel type and automatic transmission but will be entering market with a bigger and waterproof battery pack, delivering a range of 300km in a single full charge with 95 kW power output. With regard to the price points, it is expected to range between the Rs 10 - 15 lakh bracket.
2. Volvo XC40 Recharge
The globally renowned carmaker, Volvo, has manifested its intention to switch to electric vehicles and is all set to launch its Volvo XC40 Recharge, an electric SUV. Volvo’s first all-electric offering will be launched in India as a completely built unit (CBU), with a white-finished panel that houses the Volvo badge along with new alloy wheels. Expected to arrive in the first quarter of 2022, Volvo XC40 Recharge gets an AWD system, provides a range of over 400km (WLTP cycle), and will be priced somewhere between Rs 50 - 60 lakh.
3. Mahindra XUV300 Electric
Projected to be one of the highlight launches of 2022, Mahindra XUV300 Electric would be an exact dubbed version of XUV300. While the overall look will remain the same, special upgrades like the LED headlight unit with blue graphics, a new redesigned closed grille at the front and the new floating-style infotainment screen, will help differentiate the electric XUV300/400 from its gasoline counterpart. Projected to be priced around 15-18 lakhs, it will come equipped with a 30.2 kWh battery that will power an electric motor which in turn will produce 127 hp.
4. BMW i4
BMW’s EV journey began with iX SUV, and the German carmaker, is all to bring in, next-in-line, an electric sedan, the i4, with an expected range of around 350 kilometers and an 83.9kWh battery pack. Poised to deliver 335 horsepower and a range of 300 miles, the e-sedan will be available with rear-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive options and cost around Rs 80 - 90 lakh approximately. A fully loaded version of the sedan is expected in the second half of 2022.
5. Mini Cooper SE
Another EV form BMW, Mini Cooper SE, got lapped up as soon as the bookings opened in November 2021; with only 50 units being brought to India by BMW. Raising the style bar high, a three-door, Mini Cooper SE, has a modest 233km range, an electric motor that makes 184PS/270Nm and the battery pack which is relatively small at 36.2kWh. Expected to have a range of 200 kilometres, the Mini Cooper SE will be priced between Rs 50 - 60 lakh. Its top speed is 150kmph and can reach 0-100kmph within 7.3 seconds.
6. Ford Mustang Mach E
Although Ford stopped making cars in India, the American giant will be offering its crossover-style SUV, in its quickest avatar, the Mustang Mach E. Expected to launch in mid 2022, the American bad boy - Mustang Mach E can make 0-96kmph sprint in just 3.5 seconds. Projected to go on more than 500km on a single charge, Mustang Mach E which is priced around Rs 80 lakh will serve an extensive market.
7. Mercedes-Benz EQS
The poshest on the list, Mercedes-Benz EQS, the all-electric flagship Sedan comes bearing a lot of expectations. It packs an enormous 107.1kWh battery pack, rendering up to a massive range of 770km on a single charge. An Ev version for the S-Class of Mercedes-Benz, EQS comes with an impressive charging speed that can go from zero to eighty percent in 35 minutes. While the price range varies from 1-2 crore, equipped with world-class features, EQS exudes luxury.
8. MG ZS EV 2022
2022 will witness the launch of the updated ZS EV. Poised to be similar to Astor, its ICE equivalent, ZS EV will come with more feathers to its hat highlighting the more features onboard -- like the AI robot and bigger battery packs with a higher range. Expected to be launched in mid-2022, ZS EV will be priced around 22 lakh.
9. Tesla Model 3
While there have been rumors flying around, Model 3 is expected to come in a completely loaded avatar. Projected to arrive somewhere around mid-2022, it will be priced around Rs 90 lakh.
10 Kona Electric
The Kona Electric will forever remain India's first long-range EV. For the first time, launched during a time when EV was steeped in too many unresolved questions, Kona, couldn’t gather many numbers. To reverse its fortunes, the Kona Electric is all charged up to return with an updated version. About, the price points, it is expected to range between the Rs 24 - 25 lakhs bracket and will be seen by mid-2022.
